Molding

For large quantity and relatively lower precision requirement production, molding provides one of the most cost-effective way of manufacturing of aspheres. Shanghai Optics use plastic material and several different glass materials that are suitable for precision molding due to their low transformation temperatures. Precision Glass Molding

Precision Glass Molding is the process of producing high volume applications using an ultra-precision glass pressing process.  It is used to manufacture lenses from consumer products such as camera and cell phones cameras to high end medical systems.  In most high-volume applications, it’s more efficient and cost effective than traditional mechanical grinding and polishing procedures.

 Glass Molding Process:  Glass blanks are loaded into the molding tool.  The process chamber is filled with Nitrogen to remove Oxygen from the working area.  The system is heated using Infrared lamps to the working temperature.  Once the transition temperature and glass softening temperature is reached, the molds will begin to close and press on the glass until the custom thickness is reached.  When the molding is completed, the lens will be removed when cooled and the Nitrogen is removed from the system.

Traditional Polishing

Sometimes the many challenges that optics manufacturers have had to overcome while polishing glass aspheric surfaces have left designers with little confidence that precision glass aspheres can be manufactured in volume production, with tight specification, with a reasonable budget and in a short lead-time. Over the past decade our understanding of technology and the polishing process has lead to the emergence of “new tools and manufacturing method” which make it possible for us to routinely produce a wide variety of sophisticated high precision aspheres. At Shanghai Optics we take pride in our ability to produce cost-effective high precision glass aspheres that provide our customers the competitive advantage for their custom applications.
